Original Publication Date April 15, 2018 - 8:51 PM

CROZET, Va. - Virginia State Police say the lone person aboard a small plane was killed when the aircraft crashed.

State Police said Monday in a press release that they're still trying to identify the body pulled from the wreckage.

The twin-engine Cessna crashed about 9 p.m. Sunday in Crozet, 12 miles (19 kilometres) west of Charlottesville.

State police said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Severe weather and tornado warnings had moved throughout the region near the plane crash. Homes were destroyed. Thousands lost power.

Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twitter that he's declared a state of emergency to help local and state agencies respond.

The National Weather Service is sending a team to Albemarle County to determine if a tornado caused the high winds.
