Reactions to nominations for the 88th Academy Awards

Original Publication Date January 14, 2016 - 9:10 AM

Reactions to nominations announced Thursday for the 88th Academy Awards:

___

I like the awards ceremonies better when you know you're going to win. It's a lot less stressful. — Double nominee Steve Golin, producer of "The Revenant" and "Spotlight."

___

"I am sitting in a coffee shop with my mum and just found out I have an Oscar nomination. Feeling very overwhelmed and just can't believe it. Better pick out a gown." — Sam Smith, nominated for his original song for "Spectre."

___

"I haven't figured out what it is perhaps besides going to breakfast. I feel like it's just meals galore. Some great breakfast, some great lunch." — "The Hateful Eight" supporting actress nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh.

___

"It makes it feel very personal, even though that's kind of silly to say about an animated film with lots of colour. It's completely absurd in that it has emotions as characters, yet at its heart it really feels like this is something that came from my personal experience that was meaningful and difficult for me, both myself growing up and watching my kids grow up, specifically my daughter." — "Inside Out" writer-director (and double nominee) Pete Docter, whose experiences with his daughter inspired the film.

___

"I was eating my lunch and the news came through. It gave me indigestion, but it was great news." — "Shaun the Sheep" writer-director Mark Burton on finding out the film is up for best animated feature.

___

"We were screaming like idiots in the pitch black with the smell of waffles in the room." — "The Big Short" writer-director Adam McKay, who had an early morning party at his house to watch the nominations.

___

"I don't think we can expect any Oscars, but we're perfectly happy just to be invited to the party. I think I'll just keep looking around and go, 'Wow. These people are supposed to be my peers?' — Writer Nick Hornby, nominated for adapted screenplay for "Brooklyn."

___

"It always feels amazing 'cause think about how many songs are out in a year; there's like hundreds, if not thousands of songs every year ... it's pretty amazing. ...It doesn't get old." — Diane Warren, nominated with Lady Gaga for their original song "Til it Happens to You."

___

"I am incredibly humbled by this honour. I was not expecting it ... especially at this time in my life." — Sylvester Stallone on his supporting actor nod for playing Rocky Balboa in "Creed," 40 years after his nominations for the original film.
