Officials: Suspect in SUV theft fatally shot by police

MIAMI - Authorities say a man suspected of stealing an SUV from a South Florida car dealership was fatally shot during a confrontation with police.

Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard said during a news conference that two officers spotted the vehicle Monday after it had been reported stolen by the dealership. Police say the man refused to obey commands, so an officer smashed the SUV's window with an expandable baton.

Pinkard says the man pulled out a machete and began making threats. Shots were fired, though it wasn't immediately clear if one or both officers did the shooting.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police weren't immediately releasing the names or races of the suspect or officers.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
