Hubig's Pies burns down in New Orleans; factory made iconic fried snack pies since the 1920s

NEW ORLEANS - A fire has gutted a bakery that pleased New Orleans' tastes for generations with its locally iconic line of fried snack pies.

New Orleans Fire Department spokesman Capt. Edwin Holmes says the Simon Hubig Pie Co. in the Marigny neighbourhood was a total loss Friday morning. He says houses next to the structure suffered some exterior damage, but no one was injured.

Hubig's had operated there since 1922. Its sugar-coated, hand-size fried pies, most with fruit filling, were familiar sights in grocery stores around the New Orleans area.

Holmes says the fire began in the fry room at the building's centre, although the cause had not been determined.

Co-owner Andrew Ramsey told local media outlets the company will come back, but couldn't immediately say how long it would take.
