Man linked to death of relatives faces judge

Original Publication Date April 02, 2018 - 9:21 PM

CONCORD, N.H. - A Vermont man accused by family members of killing his millionaire grandfather and possibly his mother in an attempt to collect inheritance money has faced a judge but offered few clues behind the deaths or his possible role in them.

Nathan Carman, who represented himself after firing his attorneys, appeared composed Tuesday in a brown suit. He ignored repeated questions from reporters after the hearing.

Lawyers for the family were hoping to compel Carman to provide information about firearms and financial documents. Carmen, who has invoked his 5th amendment rights, said he didn't have the documents, never had them or felt they were unrelated. The judge took the document request under advisement.

Carman has been called a suspect in the 2013 shooting death of his grandfather, real estate developer John Chakalos in Connecticut, and the 2016 disappearance of his mother.
