Jazz Foundation to raise $1M to help musicians rebuild

NEW ORLEANS - For 27 years, the Jazz Foundation of America has quietly been helping to rebuild the lives of musicians snagged by disasters like the unprecedented flooding that swamped Louisiana in August.

Now the group is announcing a new pledge drive, to raise $1 million for musicians in immediate and ongoing need following the flood that damaged more than 60,000 homes, displaced 20,000 people and contributed to 13 deaths in the state.

The foundation's director, Wendy Oxenhorn, said Tuesday that musicians provide the "soundtrack to our lives," so it's imperative "we do all we can to offer our support" in helping them rebuild.

The JFA provides emergency financial, medical, housing and legal assistance as well as work opportunities for musicians in need.
