RALEIGH, N.C. - The Latest on the crash of two Navy fighter jets off the coast of North Carolina (all times local):

3:15 p.m.

Navy officials say they are not sure if two fighter jets collided before they crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the North Carolina coast.

Naval Air Force Atlantic spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Tiffani Walker said the two F/A-18 Super Hornet jet fighters were involved in an "in-flight mishap" Thursday morning. She said she could not provide further details, but that an investigation is underway.

The Coast Guard had initially said the jets collided in air before crashing.

The jets crashed during a training mission off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Officials said the four aviators were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

2:30 p.m.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says the four crew members on board two jet fighters that collided off the North Carolina coast suffered minor injuries, but are in "very high spirits."

Lt. Cmdr. Krystyn Pecora told reporters Thursday that officials are "happy to have brought everyone home safely."

Navy spokesman Ensign Mark Rockwellpate says two Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet jet fighters were on a routine training mission when they collided about 10:40 a.m. Thursday off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Rockwellpate says four crew members were taken to the hospital in Norfolk, but he didn't have information about the extent of their injuries.

He says a safety investigation will be carried out to determine what happened.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Canup says Coast Guard crews were notified about 10:30 a.m. Thursday of the collision. He says the four were plucked off a commercial fishing ship that pulled them out of the Atlantic Ocean and flown by Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
