North Carolina county declares itself 'gun sanctuary'

MURPHY, N.C. - Officials in North Carolina's westernmost county have voted to declare themselves a "gun sanctuary county."

The Cherokee Scout reports the Cherokee County Commissioners voted 3-2 to pass a three-page resolution that in part says the county will defy efforts by state or federal government to enforce strict gun-control laws.

The declaration, which passed last week, is considered mostly symbolic.

Commissioner C.B. McKinnon posted the entire resolution on his Facebook page. It reads in part that the county government will not authorize any of its resources for enforcing or assisting in the enforcement of laws "that infringe upon the rights of people to keep and bear arms."

Several Western states have taken similar action.
