Original Publication Date December 05, 2017 - 3:41 AM

CHARLESTON, S.C. - About 20 people have been allowed to return home after they were evacuated when a gasoline tanker overturned in South Carolina.

Charleston police and firefighters responded to a fuel tanker overturned on an Interstate 26 ramp just before 10 p.m. Monday. The truck was carrying 8,700 gallons of gasoline in two tanks and fuel leaked from a smaller 3,000 gallon tank.

Hazardous material crews worked to contain the spilled fuel.

Jason Krusen with the Charleston Fire Department told local news outlets that people were free to return home Tuesday morning.

The tanker was turned to an upright position Tuesday morning. Some roads were not reopening until late Tuesday morning.

The truck driver was not hurt. It wasn't known what prompted the truck to flip over.
