OLATHE, Kan. - Authorities believe two Kansas City-area men charged with kidnapping and raping a sheriff's deputy have attacked others, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Steve Howe, the district attorney in Johnson County, Kansas, said he hopes more victims will come forward now that William Luth, 24, of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Brady Newman-Caddell, 21, of Independence, Missouri, are in custody. The suspects are being held on $1 million bond on charges of rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sodomy.
"We have good information that leads us to believe there were others," Howe said.
The deputy, who is in her 20s and has been with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for six months, wasn't in uniform Friday when she was abducted from the parking lot of the detention centre in Olathe as she headed to work, according to authorities. Olathe is a Kansas City suburb that's about 30 to 40 miles from the Missouri suburbs where the men are from.
Authorities have said that after the deputy was forced into the car, her eyes were covered with a sweatshirt and she was driven around while being sexually assaulted. She was released about two hours later near Interstate 470 in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri.
DNA evidence has been submitted to a crime lab for testing, investigators said.
Earlier this week, Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning said the deputy's abduction didn't appear to be a targeted attack.
Luth's attorney, David Bell, was not immediately available for comment early Wednesday afternoon. Howe's office said it didn't appear Newman-Caddell had obtained counsel.
