Carnegie celebrates Beethoven with pair of symphony cycles

Original Publication Date January 30, 2019 - 9:21 AM

NEW YORK - Carnegie Hall will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth with 35 events next season and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Isaac Stern, who helped save the auditorium from demolition in the 1960s.

Carnegie will present two complete cycles of Beethoven symphonies in the same season for the first time, one on period instruments with conductor John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique from Feb. 19-24 and one with conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra from March 13 to April 3.

Violinist Leonidas Kavakos, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax perform all-Beethoven chamber music programs in March 2020 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of concerts performed by Stern with cellist Leonard Rose and pianist Eugene Istomin.

The season opens Oct. 3 with Cleveland Orchestra music director Franz Welser-Most conducting his orchestra, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Yefim Bronfman in a program that includes Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Romance for Violin and Orchestra.

Beethoven was baptized in December 1770; there is no record of his birthdate. Stern was born on July 21, 1920, became a famed violinist and the first president of Carnegie Hall Corp., which named its main auditorium in his honour.

Gardiner, Nezet-Seguin, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and singer/songwriter Angelique Kidjo curate the Perspectives Series. Jorg Widmann holds the composer's chair for the season.

The season also includes a concert performance of the third act of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" on April 15, 2020, featuring tenor Jonas Kaufmann, soprano Emily Magee and Andris Nelsons conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Daniel Barenboim conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Mahler's Fifth, Seventh and Ninth Symphonies in June 2020.
