The Latest: Search for vanished family turns up woman's body

LEGGETT, Calif. - The Latest on the search for a missing family whose SUV plunged into a California river (all times local):

4:40 p.m.

Authorities searching for a family whose SUV plunged into a Northern California river have found the body of a woman.

Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allmansays the body was found Friday morning about 7 miles (11 kilometres) south of where the family's SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week.

The Sheriff's Office says the woman was found on exposed ground that had been covered by the river in recent days because of a storm. Officials initially thought the remains were that of a child, but later clarified that it was a woman.

The body hasn't yet been identified but authorities have been searching for four members of the Thottapilly family of Santa Clarita: a man and wife and their two children.

The search along the Eel River is north of where another search has been going on along the Mendocino County coast for members of a family of eight whose SUV plunged off a towering ocean bluff and into the surf line below.

Five bodies were found March 26 but three children were missing. A body pulled out of the surf last weekend was not immediately identified.
