Box office top 20: 'The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies' edges 'Into the Woods,' 'Unbroken'

NEW YORK, N.Y. - In a battle for holiday box-office supremacy, Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" maintained its three-week rule with $21.7 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

Disney's Stephen Sondheim musical "Into the Woods" trailed with $18.7 million, with Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" close behind with $18.2 million. Both films in their second week of release couldn't quite overcome "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," which has earned a total of $220.6 million in three weeks.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theatres Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theatre locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Rentrak:
