Man arrested in beating death in North Carolina

GASTONIA, N.C. - A North Carolina man accused of using his hands and elbows to beat a man to death has been charged with second-degree murder.

News outlets report that Gaston County police have charged 29-year-old Scottie Lee Blanton in the death of 22-year-old Garrett Wade Abernathy.

Police say Blanton used his hands and elbows to beat Abernathy on Friday night at a mobile home park.

Abernathy was taken to a hospital in Lincolnton and was transferred to a Charlotte hospital where he died Saturday.

Capt. Curtis Rosselle said Monday that police don't know what prompted the attack.

Rosselle said the men had been living together at the mobile home for several weeks.

It was not known if Blanton has an attorney.
