Report: Man convicted in death of beaten, burned man

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A newspaper reports a North Carolina man has been convicted of killing a man who was beaten and burned after the two met at a bar.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported a Guilford County jury returned the guilty verdict Monday against 29-year-old Garry Gupton. He was charged with killing 46-year-old Stephen White at a Greensboro hotel in 2014.

The paper says Gupton testified that he met White at a gay bar and that the pair agreed to have sex at the hotel. It adds Gupton said something happened during the encounter and he hit, strangled and beat White before setting him on fire.

Jurors had deliberated for three days. They are expected to return Nov. 6 to hear testimony on whether Gupton should receive the death penalty.
