The Latest: Wisconsin Assembly speaker deciding on run

April 12, 2018 - 11:06 AM

MADISON, Wis. - The Latest on race for House Speaker Paul Ryan's congressional seat (all times local):

12:55 p.m.

Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he'll decide by Friday whether to run for the congressional seat being vacated by House Speaker Paul Ryan.

The Republican Vos said Thursday he wants to talk about it with his wife and decide by Friday. He notes that Ryan held the seat for 20 years and having the chance to run is a "once in a generation opportunity."

But Vos also says that he has a "really good job" being speaker of the state Assembly where he says Republicans can get a lot of things done versus just being another member of Congress.

Numerous other Republican state office holders and others are also considering joining the race after Ryan announced Wednesday he was not seeking re-election.

8:38 a.m.

Former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus says he won't run for Congress to replace House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Priebus ruled out a run on "The Jay Weber Show" Thursday.

Priebus was one of several potential candidates that Republicans in Wisconsin said Wednesday may be interested in running for the seat that includes Kenosha, where Priebus used to live.

Priebus is the former Wisconsin Republican Party chairman, a post he held until he left in 2011 to serve as Republican National Committee chairman. He served just six months as chief of staff before resigning in July.

He now lives outside of Washington where he works as an attorney.

Other Republicans considering running include Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Ryan friend and attorney Bryan Steil (STYLE) and several other lawmakers.
