PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A lawsuit concerning more than 12,000 speeding tickets issued by Providence, Rhode Island, speeding cameras in just a month has postponed upcoming portable speed camera-related court trials in the city.
Thousands of drivers are suing the city over tickets stemming from just six cameras in city school zones. The Providence Municipal Court postponed the trials originally scheduled to be held on Thursday nights in April while the city fights the federal class-action suit.
The city said Thursday it has now issued nearly 21,000 tickets due to the cameras.
The first hearing on the lawsuit is scheduled for Tuesday. The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order on the ticket program. State lawmakers are considering multiple bills that could change how municipalities install traffic cameras.
The mayor's office previously declined to comment on pending litigation.
