Upscale dessert gala showcases the talents of the College’s Pastry Arts students

Fashioned after world-class events in foodie meccas like New York and Chicago, Okanagan College presents its first-ever dessert extravaganza called Winter Indulgence on Feb. 14.

On Valentine’s Day, Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus cafeteria will be transformed into a winter wonderland for this special evening of dessert and wine pairings starting at 7 p.m.

“Pastry is about celebration and joy,” says event organizer and Pastry Arts instructor Anna Mandziuk.

“This event highlights that celebration through the creation of stunning, artfully displayed desserts while at the same time showcasing the skills and techniques the students have learned in the program.”

This sweet spectacular features seven themed tables brimming with creative confections such as Sacher torte, hazelnut madelines, French macarons, flourless chocolate pyramids, vanilla bean cheesecake tarts with wine berry compote, and Guinness stout ginger cake with caramel sauce.

The evening also includes charcuterie and flambé stations as well as coffee/tea and wine supplied by local wineries.

“Winter Indulgence has been such a great learning experience because everyone in the class brings unique ideas to the table,” says Pastry Arts student and mother of four children Cory-Lee Neufeld.

“Chef Mandziuk gave us guidelines but she’s let us use our creativity in creating the desserts,” says Neufeld. “We’ve really been allowed to make the event our own.”

Winter Indulgence takes place on Feb. 14 from 7-9 p.m. at Okanagan College in Kelowna. Tickets are $35. Proceeds from the event support the Pastry Arts program.
