UPDATE: Fire burning near Mission Hill in West Kelowna

WEST KELOWNA - The fire may be almost out but the work is not done.

Crews from West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) and the BC Wildfire Service will remain on scene this afternoon, extinguishing the remaining hot spots according to a media release.

You may notice sprinklers and hose lines that have been left in place as well as ongoing firefighting activity in the vicinity. Fire Chief Jason Brolund asks the public to report any signs of smoke or fire.

Fire investigators from WKFR and the RCMP have worked in cooperation to identify the area of origin and completed their fire cause investigation.

The fire appears to have started off a trail above Boucherie Rd. There were signs of human activities in the area, including campfire pits and garbage/debris. However, the exact cause of the fire could not be determined.

The fire is considered suspicious and the RCMP will continue to pursue the investigation. If you have any information that may help with the investigation contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.

The public is reminded that current weather conditions have pushed our fire danger rating into the “high” category. Fires can start and spread quickly under these conditions, as we saw last night. Please be responsible with sources of ignition including campfires and smoldering cigarette butts.
