KAMLOOPS - Kamloops city council has approved two more retail cannabis stores in Kamloops, but not without some opposition.

Council voted unanimously to approve applications for pot shops at 630 Victoria St. and 205 Tranquille Rd. at its meeting this afternoon, Dec. 18, with Coun. Denis Walsh excusing himself because of a conflict of interest. Walsh is in the process of applying for a retail cannabis licence.

With the two approvals today, city council has now given the green light to seven cannabis store locations so far, including the government-run B.C. Cannabis Store which opened on legalization day in October. The province gets the final say on the applications.

Neil West appeared before council to support the Victoria Street location.

"Don’t deny honest business," West said.

Cathy Inskip was opposed to the Tranquille Road location due to the potential of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area.

Coun. Arjun Singh addressed her concern before announcing his support of the proposal.

"I think that ultimately I am confident in the ability of staff to plan," Singh said. "Also to enforce things that are coming up afterward."

Inskip was disappointed with council's decision.

"(It'll) bring in so much traffic in such a congested area," she said. "We have a Mac store, a Kami Pizza, there's a Cash Store, and now this."
