Two arrested after shots fired in Vernon

May 16, 2019 - 1:21 PM

VERNON - Vernon police arrested two people following a response to numerous calls of gunshots heard yesterday evening.

Officers descended on the area around the 3000 block of 41st Avenue in Vernon around 9 p.m. yesterday, May 15, but learned the vehicles associated with the incident had already fled the scene, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP say a vehicle was located on Highway 97 a short time later by an officer patrolling in Spallumcheen, north of Vernon, and a high risk stop was initiated due to the risk of firearms in the vehicle.

"Police and public safety are of the utmost importance to police and we treat every incident involving a firearm as serious," Vernon RCMP media relations officer Corporal Tania Finn said in the release. "The two people inside the vehicle complied with the police officer’s direction and were quickly taken into custody without further incident."

A 20-year-old woman from Vernon was arrested and later released, while a 26-year-old Kelowna man was also arrested and remains in custody.

RCMP say there have been no reports of any injuries as a result of the shots fired, but an investigation continues and police remain on scene.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Vernon RCMP at 250-260-7149, call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or leave a tip online at
