Kamloops, BC—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack competitive cheer squad have kicked off their season on a great note.  The WolfPack captured first place at the “Mardi Party Extravaganza” event in Richmond this weekend (Feb 25-26).

TRU was competing in the Level 4 bracket and were part of five collegiate teams competing.

“We scored high range for difficulty in all categories (stunts, tumble, tosses, pyramid, overall performance and dance),” said WolfPack co head coach Mikayla Levy.
The ‘Pack recorded scores of 4.6 out of 5 on the first day and 4.8 on the second day.

“We had some of the highest difficulty scores in the entire event,” Levy added. “Our technique score took a hit and was lower that what we were expecting.”
Added co head coach Meaghan Blakely:  “On day one, three of our stunt groups executed their routine perfectly. Our highest flyer (the person at the top of the pyramid) had some out of character flaws.  On the second day, all four stunt groups executed their skills strongly. We only had points deducted on tumbling and none on stunting.”
The competitive cheer squad—which consists of one male and 18 females--is now preparing to go to Edmonton for a competition against the University of Alberta Pandas next weekend.

As far as what they will be working on is concerned?  “We will be focusing in the next month on technique which will include a special clinic with Nikki and Peter Parrota of the Okanagan Firestorm cheer team,” says Levy.
