MIAMI - Simon is rapidly weakening but remains a hurricane in the Pacific that poses no direct threat to land.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Simon's maximum sustained winds have decreased to 75 mph (120 kph) Sunday. The Category 1 hurricane is expected to continue weakening.
The centre says the hurricane is located about 485 miles (780 kilometres) west of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula and is moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph). There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Simon is expected to produce up to 4 inches (10 centimetres) of rain, with isolated amounts of 8 inches (20 centimetres), across central portions of the peninsula and in the northwestern Sonora state.
The southern California coast could experience swells Monday and Tuesday.
