The Tremont Creek wildfire roared to life yesterday, Aug. 11, near Tunkwa Lake Provincial Park northeast of Logan Lake.

“The fire challenged guards on the east flank, just north of Leighton Lake,” B.C. Wildfire Service reported on its website. “Increased fire activity resulted in the fire escaping containment lines in some areas east of Leighton Lake. Fire progression continued through the evening and growth has been to the north and south.”

Leighton Lake is within a few metres of Tunkwa Lake and is within the park boundaries.

The wildfire service says the increased activity was not due to controlled burns that were conducted successfully about eight kilometres to the north.

“Structure protection personnel have been deployed to assess properties in the Tunkwa Creek area,” B.C. Wildfire says.

The fire’s north flank is showing minimal to no fire activity on the south side of the Thompson River near Walhachin.

The Oregon Jack Creek Indian Band has issued an evacuation order while Logan Lake and Ashcroft are under evacuation alerts. The evacuation order for Walhachin has been downgraded to an evacuation alert.
