Traffic light toppled in Penticton collision

A pickup driver has been charged with failing to ramain at the scene of an accident following a collision with a concrete barrier and traffic light standard at the intersection of Skaha Lake Road and Airport Road on Saturday morning, June 9, 2018.

PENTICTON - A Penticton man is facing a charge of failing to remain at the scene of an accident and was given an immediate roadside prohibition following a hit-and-run collision with a traffic light standard early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at the intersection of Skaha Lake Road and Airport Road when a 59-year-old Penticton man driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck slammed into a concrete barrier and struck the traffic light standard on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Penticton RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says a witness at the scene described the vehicle to police. It was found at a nearby campground a short time later with the driver still behind the wheel and the engine running.

The vehicle’s airbag was been deployed and a nearby vehicle at the campground was also damaged in the collision, Wrigglesworth says.

B.C. Ambulance paramedics attended the scene.
