The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), in partnership with Hockey Canada, announced the camp roster for Team Canada West, for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge, and the roster includes three Penticton Vees.

Defenceman Griffin Mendel (99), James Miller (98) and Jonny Tychonick (00) are among three of the 60 players invited to the three-day camp, December 5th to 8th in Leduc, Alberta.  In total, 25 BCHL players were invited to the selection camp.

“Coaches from all five leagues representing Team Canada West assisted in identifying players which will make for a fast-paced, very competitive selection camp,” said Trevor Alto Director of Operations for Team Canada West. “The focus is on competition for the 22 roster spots; however, the staff is dedicated to providing each invitee every opportunity to not only put their best foot forward, but to also enjoy the opportunity to represent Team Canada West.”

Mendel, 17, has played in all 26 Vees’ games this season picking up three assists along the way, and is considered one of the top shutdown defencemen in the BCHL this season. Miller, 18, was acquired earlier this season from the Olds Grizzlys and is the second-highest scoring defenceman on the Vees’ roster, with two goals and 10 points in 19 games; he has three points in his last three games. Tychonick is the Vees youngest rear-guard, but despite being just 16, he’s tied with Miller and Joe Leahy for the scoring lead among Vees’ blue-liners with 10 points. Tychonick has already suited up for Canada this season, as he was on Team Canada White for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario earlier this month.

The three will leave for camp on Sunday, December 4th, with the final 22-man roster expected to be announced on Thursday, December 8th.

The 2016 World Junior A Challenge, which features two Canadian and four international teams, takes place from Dec.11-17 at the R.J. Lalonde Arena, in Bonnyville, Alberta. Canada West is the defending gold medal winning team and have won gold four times (2015, 2012, 2007 and 2006).
