Three people taken to hospital after boat crashes in Oxbow Provincial Park

FILE PHOTO -

Three people were sent to the hospital last night after their boat crashed in a provincial park near Kamloops.

Kamloops Search and Rescue search manager Paula Davies said crews received a call about the incident at 8 p.m., Aug. 6 in Walhachin Oxbows Provincial Park. At least one of the boaters had a head injury but search and rescue did not have details on the severity of their injuries.

The boat crashed in a rocky location, so the search and rescue team called the Canadian Forces 4424 Squadron rescue unit from Comox to assist. Before the Comox unit arrived however, a private boat picked up the group and transported them.

“To access them was really difficult,” Davies said, adding they could only reach them by boat or helicopter.

“We weren’t able to get a boat and it was dark so the regular helicopter wouldn't have been able to help us so we needed something to fly in the dark.”

It’s not often the search and rescue team has to call in the Canadian Armed Forces for assistance, she said.

The Kamloops RCMP could not be immediately reached for comment.
