Three people have died in a house fire near Vernon.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the fire completely engulfed a home on Commonage Road just before midnight March 6.

The adult residents in the home at the time were unable to escape the fire.

"The residence was completely destroyed and once the scene was deemed safe, an examination was conducted and what were believed to be human remains were found inside the home," the release reads.

The BC Coroners Service subsequently located the remains of three individuals.

"This is an incredibly tragic incident and our sincerest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the deceased," Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

The cause of the fire remains unknown but based on a preliminary investigation, no criminality is suspected.

No other details have been released.
