KAMLOOPS - Vernon's own Landon Currie earned an elite award at the under-21 Pan American men's volleyball championship tournament in Lima, Peru over the weekend.

Currie, who plays for the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack team, was named top digger at the tournament, which wrapped up on May 11. Currie played for team Canada, which won silver after losing the gold medal match to Cuba 3-0.

Currie, who played as a libero, had 14 digs and seven assists during the gold medal game. He also had seven digs when team Canada beat Puerto Rico 3-0 in the semi-final match.

“Overall we had a great week considering we had only six to eight practices before we came here," Currie said in a press release. "I thought we put up a great fight in the final. It was an honor winning this award because there were so many good liberos in this tournament.”

Currie and the rest of his team are headed for Gatineau, Quebec for open tryouts on the junior national team which will compete at the under-21 World Championships in Behrain this summer.
