The best places in the Okanagan to fill your pie hole

Mom's Rhubarb Pie
Mom's Rhubarb Pie

Living in the Okanagan means fresh fruit at our fingertips all year long - either fresh or from local storage. And fruit products, including pie, are usually 'the' dessert of choice for locals and visitors here.

Growing up on a fruit orchard, making pies was an integral part of my family culture. From rhubarb pie to apple, pear and pumpkin, we have a family pie recipe for every season and making pies with my Granny and mom was always a highlight especially when your reward was a slice of warm pie with ice cream.

If you are not pastry inclined, or too busy to make your own, here are some places to buy the best homemade fruit pies that are perfect to celebrate the harvest season. Thanksgiving is coming up so do take note because fruit pies freeze beautifully, and when you buy these from-scratch pies, you can always pass them off as your own creation if you like(wink).

Here is a tasty tour of where best to fill your pie hole!

Summerland:

How can you go wrong with buying a pie from a place named Granny’s? Still reigning in the area for the best fruit pies as well as being a well-stocked fruit stand, they are now becoming an eatery destination. With new owners on board that have a ton of previous restaurant experience, Granny’s Fruit Stand & Bakery has been elevated to the next level. They are baking bread, making soup, and pizza too and are open a couple of nights a week for dinner. It is a handy spot too, just off the highway, easy to grab a pie on the run.

Don-O-Ray fruit stand on Benvoulin Road has a massive array of fruit pies that are all made in house with local fruit and berries. Owned and operated by the friendly Sanghera and Basran families who are third generation farmers between India and Kelowna, they have transformed what used to be a regular fruit stand into a mega farm stand operation. Besides a huge offering of their own fruit, vegetables, berries for sale, they have a grocery section that includes local dairy, eggs, preserves and cheeses and a huge freezer section that includes the fruit pies and a selection of their homemade Indian food (including the addictive butter chicken)! This has become a one stop shop.
