OTTAWA - A young Ottawa man arrested in an alleged terrorist conspiracy is confused and upset over the serious accusations, says his lawyer.

Doug Baum, counsel for Suliman Mohamed, said Tuesday he knows very little about the case against his client.

The Crown has not yet disclosed details of the charges involving Mohamed or his two suspected co-conspirators — likely because the police investigation wrapped up so suddenly.

Mohamed, 21, made a brief court appearance Tuesday after being charged a day earlier with participation in the activity of a terrorist group.

He is also accused of conspiracy to participate in a terrorist activity with two other Ottawa men.

Twin 24-year-old brothers Ashton Carleton Larmond and Carlos Honor Larmond were arrested on various terror-related charges last Friday.

The RCMP moved quickly to nab Carlos at the Montreal airport as he was about to board a plane overseas. He had a ticket to India — though it is unclear if this was his final destination — and faces a charge of attempting to leave Canada to take part in terrorist activity.

All three men are due back in court Feb. 12.

A sombre-looking Mohamed looked on Tuesday as Crown prosecutor Rod Sonley requested an order preventing him from talking to the Larmond brothers in the Ottawa jail while they await bail hearings.

"It's not an unusual practice — when you have a conspiracy charge — to seek that type of order, to make sure the conspiracy comes to an end," Sonley said afterwards.

Baum described Mohamed as a "normal kid in almost every respect" who had never been in trouble with the law.

"My client isn't saying anything at this point," Baum said following the hearing. "He doesn't know very much either — he knows as much as I know, which is very little.

"Obviously, he's very confused and upset," Baum said. "We're going to have to wait at least several weeks before we get the disclosure and we're able to find out and understand the full weight of the accusations that are pending against all of these fellows."

Mohamed's father Idris, who attended the hearing, also had little to go on.

"I have no ideas at all," he said upon leaving the courthouse with the young man's mother. "So far I know nothing."

Baum said Mohamed's arrest took the family by surprise.

"Naturally they believe that their son hasn't done anything untoward," he said. "They're anxious as well to see the disclosure and understand what the nature of the allegations are."
