Montreal's Eugenie Bouchard wins 2nd round match at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia - Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the third round of the Australian Open early Wednesday.

The 30th seed from Montreal recorded a 6-2 victory in the first set against unseeded Virginie Razzano of France and needed a tiebreaker to take the second set 7-6.

Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver, the 28th seed, was scheduled to face unseeded Matthew Ebden of Australia in a second-round match later on.

In men’s doubles, Toronto veteran Daniel Nestor and his partner, Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia won their opening match.

The number-eight seeds handily defeated the German duo of Benjamin Becker and Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-3.

In women’s doubles, however, Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Monica Puig of Puerto Rico lost their opening match. They lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Spaniards Garbine Muguruza and Arantxa Parra Santonja.
