KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops man charged with stabbing a cab driver is expected to plead guilty to the offence this summer.

Austin Eyres, born 1996, was 19 years old when he was charged with aggravated assault in connection to the stabbing of Kami Cabs driver Cal Huntington in August of 2016.

During a brief hearing in Kamloops Supreme Court today, April 24, defence lawyer Jay Michi said there's now expected to be no trial for Eyres this July.

"Mr. Eyres is going to be entering a guilty plea, we expect," Michi told the court.

He was charged with the offence after a cab ride in the early morning hours of Aug. 24, 2016 turned violent. Kamloops RCMP originally said a cab driver had been stabbed and taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

The cab driver, Cal Huntington, spoke to iNFOnews.ca in the weeks following. He said he had picked the fare up from the Sahali Husky Gas Station on Columbia Street West.

Huntington drove the fare downtown and said once he stopped his vehicle, the man pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed Huntington four times.

Cal Huntington says he's eager to get back to work after being stabbed four times by a fare last month.
