WONOWON, B.C. - A hazardous material team is at the Alaska Highway in northeastern British Columbia after a tanker truck carrying over 60,000 litres of gasoline rolled into a ditch.
RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says a cap at the top of the vehicle was opened, causing an unknown amount of gasoline to spill by the community of Wonowon (WAN'-OH'-win) last night.
An area of 300 metres — including a 200-worker camp, a gas station and a few residences — was evacuated for safety.
Shelkie says the area has now been deemed safe, and residents have been allowed back into their homes.
She says the truck driver was not impaired, and no injuries or further car accidents have been reported.
The Environment Ministry is expected to assess any possible damage caused by the spill.
