Canadian Noemie Thomas wins 100-metre butterfly at Pro Swim Series

AUSTIN, Texas - Noemie Thomas earned one of three Canadian medals on Thursday to open the second stop on the Pro Swim Series circuit.

The Richmond, B.C., native took top spot in the women's 100-metre butterfly race in 58.57 seconds, with American swimmer Katie McLaughlin placing second at 58.77 and fellow American Cassidy Bayer third at 59.31.

Canada's two other medals were won in the men's 4 x 100-metre freestyle relay. Swim MAC Carolina was first in three minutes 24.88 seconds followed by Vancouver's UBC Thunderbirds in second at 3:24.95 and the University of Calgary third in 3:29.69.

The UBC swimmers were Luke Peddie, Allen Coleman, Stefan Milosevic and Yuril Kisil. The Calgary foursome was comprised of David Woodman, Russell Wood, Tristan Cote and Bogdan Knezevic. The University of Alberta and Edmonton Keyano were fifth and seventh.

Two-time Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane of the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre-Victoria missed a medal by .11 seconds — finishing fourth in the 400-metre freestyle in 3:49.64. Connor Jaeger led an American sweep for gold in 3:47.58. Conor Dwyer was second in 3:49.33 and Michael McBroom third in 3:49.53.
