Police in Abbotsford captured the driver of a stolen car but there was some collateral damage.

The stolen vehicle was spotted this morning at 3:12 a.m. travelling westbound on the TransCan, according to a media release from the Abbotsford Police Department.

Officers deployed a spike belt between McCallum Road and Clearbrook Road. They were successful in ruining the tires and bringing the vehicle to a stop.

Consequently, friction between the steel rims and pavement caused the car to catch fire. Police say it was quickly extinguished by the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services, and that that section of the highway was closed to the public.

The driver tried to flee but was captured thanks to the help of the Integrated Police Dog Services. He was identified as 29-year-old Tyson Zackary Fust and labeled a prolific offender.

His 38-year-old passenger was taken into custody without issue, that person has been released and is not facing charges.

"This is another example of the Abbotsford Police Departments commitment to serve the community day and night by proactively preventing and suppressing property crimes, capturing prolific offenders that attempt to disrupt our community and ensuring our communities roads are safe," the release says.
