LONDON - Premier League struggler Newcastle was knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton for the second successive season on Saturday, going down 2-0 in the third round to the second-tier club.
Andrea Orlandi put the south-coast side side ahead in the 33rd minute from Wayne Bridge's cross.
Newcastle's prospects took a further turn for the worse when captain Shola Ameobi received a second booking for his late tackle on David Lopez in the 63rd.
Brighton extended its lead in the 87th when Will Hoskins slotted the ball through goalkeeper Rob Elliot's legs after latching onto Lopez's through ball.
Brighton beat Newcastle in the fourth round last season.
Newcastle is 15th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone.
