Sobey Art Award reveals long list for $100,000 prize

A long list of 25 contenders for the Sobey Art Award for contemporary art has been revealed.

The $100,000 prize is awarded to a visual artist aged 40 or younger who has exhibited work within the last 18 months.

The long list features five artists each from the following regions: West Coast and Yukon, Prairies and the North, Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.

A short list of five finalists will be announced on May 29 and the winner will be unveiled on Nov. 14.

In additional to the $100,000 award, the other shortlisted artists will each receive $25,000, while the other 20 longlisted artists will get $2,000.

The finalists will also be featured in a special exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, while three longlisted artists will be chosen for art residencies.
