A large amount of snow is expected on Highway 3 and the Coquihalla Highway tonight and tomorrow.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning today, Dec. 3, for Highway 3 from Princeton to Hope via the Allison Pass, and Highway 5 from Merritt to Hope.

The weather office said the 15 cm of snow will accumulate on those upper elevation highways tonight and tomorrow before turning to a few flurries Saturday night.

The Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope is currently closed to the public, while Highway 3 is open to only essential travel.

Meanwhile, the same low pressure system is expected to dump 15 to 20 cm of snow on Highway 3 to Alberta through the Kootenay Pass to Paulson Summit tonight through to Saturday afternoon.

Travel may be difficult because of rapidly accumulating snow on the impacted highways, Environment Canada warns.
