Today, Aug. 28, looks to be the last day of heat and sunshine – if the smoke doesn’t get in the way – in Kamloops and the Okanagan for much of this week.

The Environment Canada Smoky Skies bulletin continues to warn of smoke over the next 24-48 hours throughout the region.

The Air Quality Health Index forecasts moderate health risk through tomorrow.

Kamloops is getting the worst of it from the Bush Creek East Wildfire burning in the Shuswap. It has a reading of 51.5 particulates under 2.5 micrograms in size in each cubic metre of air.

The PM2.5 readings in the Okanagan are just under 30 in Vernon and Kelowna and 51.5 in Penticton. Any reading higher than 12 is considered unhealthy.

The forecast is for sunshine today with a high of 34 Celsius in Kamloops and 34 C in the Okanagan.

It’s expected to cloud over throughout the region tonight with a 60% chance of showers Tuesday in Kamloops, 30% in the Okanagan.

Showers could continue Wednesday when the high temperature throughout the region may only reach 20 C.

Showers on Thursday should ease off for Friday and Saturday but may return on Sunday.

The Bush Creek East Wildfire is still burning out of control and has now covered more than 43,000 ha. The McDougall Creek Wildfire in and around West Kelowna is also still out of control. It has consumed more than 12,000 ha.

Fires in Kelowna and Lake Country are listed as being held.
