KAMLOOPS - If your travel plans today include a trip to the Lower Mainland from the Interior, you need to be aware of the nasty weather forecast for the high elevation highways.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops through Merritt to Hope, the Okanagan Connector from Kelowna to Merritt and Highway 3 from Princeton to Hope via the Allison Pass.

A watch is also in place for the Okanagan and South Thompson regions.

Forecasters say "conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain."

The thunderstorms are expected to develop later this morning, June 26, and intensify early this afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

The weather office warns conditions on mountain highways can change quickly.
