B.C.’s culinary landscape is evolving and expanding at such high speed, it is hard to keep track. It is very exciting to taste the international flavours available across the province intertwined with our own beautifully unique cuisine celebrating the taste of our terroir from both land and sea.

Here in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, we are enjoying a delicious inflow of chefs, winemakers and growers from around the world drawn by our extraordinary gastronomic conditions. There is also an urban wave of humanity arriving from the west coast, bringing with them another level of dining culture. Here we can offer fertile ground for new concepts and a wide-open opportunity to introduce new businesses.

Row Fourteen features loads of veggie dishes but also meats like this amazing dry age cheeseburger with Farmhouse cheese, beet ketchup and warm potato salad.

A few months ago, Cawston welcomed Row Fourteen restaurant to their rural landscape. Located in the middle of an orchard at Klipper’s Organic Acres, the restaurant is all about local and organic. Chef and partner Derek Gray comes to us from Vancouver where he helped create Commercial Drive’s retro Italian hot spot Pepinos and Savio Volpe, just named #14 on Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants list. Here Chef Gray’s ever-changing, seasonal focussed menu is all about farm and fire. A wood-burning stove with a large open hearth are front and centre in the open kitchen and key to the flavour theme on the menu. Chef also loves the veg and underappreciated delights like celeriac (celery root) get the spotlight and are dressed up in different ways as the menu evolves.

Klippers Organic Acres is a certified organic farm founded in 2001 by Kevin and Annamarie Klippenstein. This family is religious about growing the most nutritious food – all is organic and grown free of pesticides or genetic modification.  Besides partnering with Derek Gray to open Row Fourteen, the Klippenstein’s are busy with other projects like Klippers Untangled Craft Cider, a line of organic craft cider with tasting room is attached to the restaurant. The family also grows and sells their produce at farmers markets and has a CSA Box Program that customers can sign up for to receive a box of weekly organic vegetables throughout the growing season. They also have accommodation with four lovely suites available right on the farm so you can book in and experience it all.

The Similkameen is fast being discovered as a destination for food and wine and did you know that Cawston is actually the organic capital of Canada? Stunning wines and a tight community of like-minded folks are congregating here making for a unique and magnetic vibe.
