Rockets smoke Winterhawks 4-2

KELOWNA - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Portland Winterhawks 4-2 on Friday night at Prospera Place in game one of the second round of the 2017 WHL Playoffs.

The shots were 21-7 for Kelowna after the first period but it was scoreless.

The Rockets opened the scoring at 3:42 of the second period as Calvin Thurkauf powered his way out of the corner and put his first goal of the post season past Winterhawks netminder Cole Kehler. 50 seconds later Kole Lind scored his second of the playoffs. 45 seconds after that Reid Gardiner ripped home his sixth. Then to top off the explosive middle period, Dillon Dube got his fifth of the post season at 16:08 and the Rockets took a hefty 4-0 lead into the final period.

It took until 10:50 into the third but Portland got on the board as Brad Ginnell notched his second of the playoffs. Portland didn't let up in their comeback attempt, scoring once more at 17:34 as Cody Glass popped his third. The Winterhawks pressed hard in the dying seconds but the Rockets shut the door for a 4-2 final.

Michael Herringer stopped 27 shots as the Rockets outshot the Winterhawks 54-29.

Kelowna now leads the best-of-seven series 1-0.

The Rockets and Winterhawks are right back at it tomorrow night for game two at Prospera Place with puck drop at 7:05pm. The series then shifts to Portland for games three and four.
