Rockets downed by Chiefs in OT

KELOWNA - The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Kelowna Rockets 5-4 in overtime on Friday night in Prospera Place.

Spokane opened the scoring 8:47 into the first period. The Chiefs slipped another past Rockets netminder Micahel Herringer three and a half minutes later. Despite leading 13-8 in shots after the first the Rockets trailed 2-0.

Spokane continued the attack as Hudson Elynuik scored on a breakaway 1:30 into the middle stanza. The Rockets elected to make a goaltender change, and in came Brodan Salmond. Nick Merkley got the Rockets on the board with his 18th of the season. Then Nolan Foote scored his 15th of his rookie campaign and the Rockets were back within one after 40 minutes of play. Kelowna held a hefty 30-14 lead in shots heading into the final frame.

Early in the final period Calvin Thurkauf scored his team leading 28th of the season and the game was knotted at 3-3. The Chiefs stopped the bleeding as Hayden Ostir jumped on a rebound to put the Chiefs back out in front. Calvin Thurkauf scored another on a 4-on-3 power play and the game was headed to overtime.

Spokane scored early in overtime to seal the deal for the Chiefs.  5-4 final.

Brodan Salmond drops to 9-7-2-0 on the season.

The Rockets fall to 33-20-5-0 on the year, with three of those five overtime losses coming from the Spokane Chiefs.

The Rockets are back at it tomorrow night when they host the Prince George Cougars for their Talk Today game, in partnership with the CMHA Kelowna.
