Risk of thunderstorms in tinder-dry Thompson-Okanagan could impact quiet wildfire season

A storm rolls over Kamloops June 29, 2015.

The forest fire danger rating for the Kamloops Fire District is high, with growing spots of extreme danger.

With temperatures soaring into the high 30s through the weekend and the risk of thunderstorms, that does not bode well for the, so far, quiet wildfire season this summer.

The Nohomin Creek fire, northwest of Lytton, is currently the only wildfire of note in the Kamloops forest district at more than 2,660 hectares. That’s about the total area burned by this year’s 101 wildfires in the region to date.

At this time last year, more than 1,250 wildfires in B.C. had burned more than 456,000 hectares and thick smoke was choking residents throughout the region.

By comparison, in all of B.C. this year, there have been 386 fires, burning 18,000 hectares.

The forecast for Kamloops today, July 30, is for a few thunderstorms ending early this morning, a mix of sun and cloud then a risk of more thunderstorms early this evening. Highs are forecast to reach 37 C today.

For the Central and North Okanagan, there’s expected to be a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon with the risk of thunderstorms late this afternoon and into this evening.

High temperatures are forecast to be 35 C.

The forecast for Penticton doesn’t mention a risk of thunderstorms or even clouds but high temperatures could reach 40 C in Osoyoos.

Environment Canada continues with its heat warning through Sunday, when temperatures are forecast to reach 37 Celsius.

Temperatures are forecast to drop about 10 degrees on Tuesday with showers.
