Retirement age begins in prison for this child molester

KELOWNA – A 64-year-old man is going to jail for molesting two of his own relatives almost 30 years ago.

The man, who can't be named by court order, appeared in court Monday with his current wife and pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault, gross indecency and sexual assault.

He admitted to sexually abusing his daughter and stepson dozens of times over a ten-year period while living in West Kelowna through the 1980s. He is a musician so he was home alone with the kids most days. Both children were under the age of five when the sexual assaults began.

When given the chance to speak after hearing his sentence, he broke into tears and apologized to his family.

“I’m so sorry for what I’ve done and I wish there was some chance to make it up to them," he said.

Judge Robin Smith said the crimes happened a long time ago and credited him for pleading guilty and showing genuine remorse.

“This must have haunted (him) forever,” he said. “He is showing real remorse but it is a bit like ripping open a feather pillow in the wind and then trying to gather up all the feathers. It’s an impossible task.”

He was sentenced to two years in jail followed by two years of probation. He will also submit a DNA sample and his name will be added to the sexual offender information registry.
