Residents file complaints due to smelly Vernon cannabis facility
The City of Vernon has received 23 complaints regarding the smell of a cannabis facility operating in the 1700 block of Kosmina Road.
The production facility is in the process of upgrading its air filtration system to mitigate the cannabis odour to ensure it aligns with Health Canada’s odour control requirements, according to a report that will be presented to city council, Monday, June 13.
Since January 2022, bylaw received 23 complaints all regarding marijuana odour from the facility.
On May 18, the facility manager indicated that upgrades to the air filtration system would be installed on June 10, and that facility filters will be changed regularly, according to the staff report. Bylaw officers have also been working with the facility to get it into compliance.
Bylaw officers will continue to monitor the facility and if the filtration system is not effectively upgraded to address the issue, they will proceed with enforcement of zoning bylaw regulations. The issue has also been reported to Health Canada and officers have requested a follow up on the matter, according to the report.
Cannabis cultivation and processing are permitted in a light industrial zone as per the zoning bylaws and the facility is regulated through Health Canada and subject to the Cannabis Act and its regulations.
