WEST KELOWNA - ‘Smokers materials’ are being blamed for a balcony fire in West Kelowna early this morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., today, June 21, crews responded to a fire on an apartment balcony in the 2700-block of Riffington Place. The lone resident was able to knock down the flames before crews arrived, keeping the fire contained to the balcony area, but suffered minor burn injuries in doing so, Darren Lee of West Kelowna Fire Rescue says in a release.

The resident was treated on scene and then taken to Kelowna General Hospital for further treatment.

Crews double checked to ensure the fire had not spread to the structure of the two-storey garden-style condominium and then overhauled the fire area.

The fire is being attributed to improper disposal of ‘smokers materials’ and is being deemed accidental.
