VERNON - Vernon RCMP are investigating after an 18-year-old Vernon woman reported being assaulted by two individuals trying to snatch her backpack early Wednesday morning.

Police say she was walking through the Harwood Elementary School property in the 4400 block of 25th Street in Vernon yesterday, July 18, when she was attacked.

Eighteen-year-old Courtnie Richardson told iNFOnews.ca she heard footsteps behind her while walking home at around 3:30 a.m. before feeling a tug on her back and being punched in the face.

Richardson said she fell to the ground and let out a loud scream and the two assailants ran off without her backpack. She was only 20 seconds from home so rushed home and her boyfriend called an ambulance.

Richardson said the assault has left her with some bone fractures and is waiting to have "two bolts and pins" installed in her face, although didn't know the specifics of her injuries. Richardson said she hadn't worried about walking around late at night but was now scared to leave the house.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Annie Linteau said in an email police received a report of a disturbance at around 4:20 a.m. July 18 and upon arriving at the scene located a woman who reported being assaulted by two individuals, although didn't give out Richardson's name.

Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to contact Vernon RCMP at 250-838-6818.
