RCMP explosive unit deals with used detonator in West Kelowna vacant lot

WEST KELOWNA - Police secured a vacant lot in West Kelowna yesterday after a concerned citizen reported seeing an item that looked like an explosive device; luckily, it turned out to be a dud.

According to a press release, RCMP were called to a vacant lot in the 2400 block of Old Okanagan Highway just after 4 p.m. yesterday, April 9, when someone reported a possibly explosive in the area.

RCMP located what looked like an explosive device and secured the lot. The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit arrived at the scene this morning, April 10, and confirmed the device was an inactive shock tube detonator.

The detonator, which is usually used for land development at construction sites, had already been discharged.

RCMP encourage citizens to err on the side of caution whenever they find potentially explosive items.
